Welcome to the webpages for the CCWH/CCHF conference Edging Forward, Acting Up: Gender and Women’s History at the Cutting Edge of Scholarship and Social Action. The conference will take place from 12 to 15 August 2010 in the beautiful Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue on the downtown campus of Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC. Our program includes sessions on social policy, art history, literature and activism, gender and the law, feminist pedagogy, health and the body, religion and community, and sexuality. Topics cross national boundaries, examining gender and women’s history in Canada, the United States, Japan, and Great Britain. Participants include junior and senior academics, independent scholars, performing and visual artists, public historians, teachers, genealogists, policy makers, and community activists. Our goal is to foster connections not only among scholars but between scholars and community, challenging participants to find ways to link feminist history with activism and to help create societal change through informed social policy. We hope that you will be able to join us!

Please note that we welcome audience participation from the broader community. If you would like to better understand the historical basis of inequality, if you would like to engage with others who are interested in social action and policy creation, please attend and contribute to our discussions. For those of you with limited time, take advantage of our special day rate of $80 (see registration page).

KEYNOTE: Adele Perry, University of Manitoba, “Terms of Reference and Endearment: The Global, the Local, and the Writing of Gender and Women’s History” 

PLENARIES: Special sessions to celebrate the long-term contributions to academia and the broader community of three influential feminist historians, Jean Barman, Andrée Lévesque, and Veronica Strong-Boag.

SPECIAL EVENTS: Ribbon. Dramatic Presentation by Patricia Darbasie, Actor and Playwright, Alberta;

and

“Absence, Silence, Action, and Voice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.” Presentation by visual artist/activist Pamela Masik and her series “The Forgotten,” with panel discussion on living and working in the DTES by residents, activists, and support providers of the area Jamie Lee Hamilton, Carol Martin, and Irene Tsepnopoulos-Elhaimer.
