Additional Online Resources for Graduate Students


This page includes a bibliography of materials dedicated to surviving graduate school, particularly how to write and defend your dissertation, dealing with the stresses of graduate work and getting published. We have also included links to organizations that deal more broadly with post-secondary education policy issues. Please let us know of other materials we can add to the list.

Publications of the GSC-CHA

The GSC has produced a Resource Guide for Teaching Assistants which was revised in 2009. The guide leads teaching assistants through the various stages of their employment from signing a work agreement and meeting with the course instructor, to first class "jitters," marking papers and exams, and initiating seminar discussions.

The AHA has published several pamphlets in the areas of teaching, professional concerns, and has a directory of grants and history departments. All titles are listed on their website.

Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC)

AUCC promotes the interests of higher education in Canada. Their website includes academic job postings, information on scholarships, higher education issues, and Canada's colleges and universities.

The national voice of the university academic staff, the CAUT is a federation of Canadian faculty associations/unions. Their website regularly posts university job opportunities and comments on academic concerns.

This guide for Canadian graduate students in history offers information and advice on how to apply to graduate schools, sources of funding, descriptions of the different stages of the Ph.D. program, life as a graduate student, and getting published and presenting papers. As well, two chapters are provided on the job search and the first years on your first job. Like the rest of the book, however, these chapters are focused on a career in academia exclusively and touch only briefly on careers outside of a university--a place where they admit the vast majority of history graduates will ply their trade as historians--and how to prepare and find such opportunities.

The National Graduate Council represents approximately 50,000 graduate student members of the Canadian Federation of Students. The NGC "advocates the interests of all graduate students nationally and internationally, provides a forum for discussion of issues of concern to graduate students, and represents graduate student's interests and concerns within the Canadian Federation of Students."

Register of Post-Graduate Dissertations in Progress in History and Related Subjects

"The primary purpose of the Register is to provide an inventory of all Ph.D. and M.A. theses in all Canadian universities dealing with any aspect whatever of history. Naturally, most entries are provided by the various history departments; however, the Register also attempts to include theses written in other departments that are historical in nature, whether their subject be Canadian or other. Moreover, the Register also seeks to cover theses in Canadian history undertaken in non-Canadian universities."
